The second season of the critically-acclaimed (and highly controversial) Netflix show 13 Reasons Why was going to have entirely different characters and actors. Yes, you read that right. No, we're not joking.
Series creator Brian Yorkey recently revealed in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly that there was a significant chance that Dylan, Minnette, Katherine Langford, and the other characters from Liberty High were not returning.
"When we sold the show, there were two ways we thought the show could continue," he said. "One way was continuing to follow these characters who really have been through tremendous trauma, all of them in some part coping with the trauma of Hannah's death and the aftermath. [But] when we originally pitched it, there was another version, which was an anthology version where, in sort of True Detective mode, every year you start with a new 13 reasons."
As you can see, there was the possibility of the current cast and their corresponding characters would not be returning for a second season.
"It became very apparent to me, somewhere in the middle of the season, that I wasn't going to be done with these characters after the first season, that I would want to know more and I would want to follow them," Brian Yorkey added.
We already know that the next season will be focused on perspectives other than Hannah's, which ultimately confirms that the cast will return, in full. We wonder how different this season will be in the portrayal of such heavy topics, after the controversy following the first series' release. We can't wait to find out!
