Ariel Winter Publicly Calls Out Slut Shamers In The Most Brilliant Way

Ariel Winter has proven herself to be brilliant at shutting down slut shamers and general body critics, but she's gone one step further, pointing out that it is our online culture that allows this kind of shaming to be so common on social media. She makes the point that this sort of criticism is most prevalent among female celebrities, as opposed to male personalities.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Style, Ariel spoke about the double standards so prevalent online where men are praised for their shirtless photos, and women are vilified for wearing clothes revealing too much skin.

“I feel like people put so much emphasis on it. Guys, all the time, go on their Instagrams and take pictures nude with guitars in front of their stuff. No one says anything. Nobody cares,” the 19-year-old explained. “When we try to be free and post what we want, it’s like, look at that slut on social media. That’s not what it is. We’re proud of our bodies. We’re proud of who we are. We’re made the way we are. Why do we care? If I take a picture and I think it looks good — if it’s a little revealing, whatever.”

She also has a message for all her haters, and those offended by what she shares: “If people don’t like it, unfollow me. If you’re so offended, why do you look at it? Don’t take the time to hate on me. Just unfollow me and follow someone who covers every part of their body to their toes. I don’t care."

The Modern Family star makes it clear that she no longer reads the comments on her Instagram post. While we applaud her for taking that step, it begs the question as to why Ariel should have to deal with this sort of cyberbullying. Why is this still happening?
