So we know 13 Reasons Why has the most diverse cast ever, and it’s done really well at casting many people of colour, and people of various sexualities. However, the great thing is that the inclusiveness doesn’t just stop at the show’s characters, and the actors’ ethnicities.
Michele Selene Ang, who plays Courtney in 13 Reasons Why, posted a photo of herself on Instagram wearing a shirt that very openly criticises white washing, and emphasised the importance of diversity.
In case you’re looking at it like:
Then we’ll explain it for you!
Each of the names on that shirt is the name of a white actor who starred in a film or show that was very much ruined by, or accused of whitewashing. A film that would have been at its best if they’d cast people of colour. These include, most recently, Scarlett Johansson in Ghost In The Shell, which was a film based on a Japanese manga that landed in a lot of hot water for featuring a white person in the lead role. Beneath Scarlett’s name, the shirt also references Emma Stone in Aloha, Tilda Swinton in Doctor Strange and Matt Damon in The Great Wall.
According to Michele, the shirt was only made for a new show called Asian AF, and she told us exactly where we could get one, telling us to DM Will Choi for a shirt. We’re pretty sure he’s probably been overwhelmed in inboxes, so we’ll let him be, but let’s hope he releases them in a store for us to buy! Because we want 100 ...
So what do you think? Do you love the shirt? Want one too? Let us know!
